In order to install Gentoo linux into a VMware virtual machines, the following needs to be compiled into the kernel:
Fusion MPT ScsiHost drivers for SPI
SCSI low-level drivers - SYM53C8XX Version 2 SCSI support
Intel(R) PRO/1000 Gigabit Ethernet support
